Please help... Can't log in after upgrade!!

Just performed the in situ upgrade from Mint KDE 15 to 16 and on rebooting get stuck at the login screen.

From there, I can get to a terminal and have tried a few suggestions that I found online but nothing seems to fix the issue and I'm out of ideas.

Code:
Xorg -configure
This tells me 'Number of created screens does not match the number of detected devices. Configuration failed'

But I'm not sure how to fix this, or even if this is my only problem.

Any help and suggestions gratefully appreciated!!

Do you have another computer?
First step is to download the Mint 16 CD/DVD you forgot to say whether you are using KDE, Cinnamon, Mate , etc

Boot from the live CD, mount your /home partition and back up all your data.

Once safely backup up you can attempt to fix your problem, but you need to provide
some hardware details.

From the login console, post the output of:

lspci | grep -i vga

Linux Mint uses kms and does not need an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.
If one is present it will read the values, sometimes generated by graphics cards like
ATI

Hi... and thanks... did mention it in my first post, but I'm using KDE.

Already backing up and downloading the live CD as you suggest, but connection is not the quickest here...

Code:
lspci | grep -i vga
gives:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09)

I am not a Mint expert, so no real clue. But have a look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log. Especially lines which start with (EE) or the last few lines which tell why X stopped.

Wait... I think I made a mistake. You do have a graphics login screen, but your login is rejected, is that right?

You could try to rename your ~/.kde directory to ~/kde-old and restart KDE.

So these steps:
CTRL-F1 to a command line
Login as root or use sudo at the next commands
/etc/init.d/kdm stop
rename the directory
/etc/init.d/kdm start

And observe any error messages after the last statement.

OK well, thanks... I tried to do what you suggested, but it appears I've found the source of the problem. Somehow it seems I've upgraded to a gnome desktop from Mint 15 KDE. Not really too sure how this happened, but unless anyone thinks it's an easy task to undo, I guess I'm looking at a clean reinstall. Many thanks for all your assistance...
