Question PHP4 + apache very slow

I am running an apache server with php4 module on redhat 9.0

I am having a problem that whenever I try to access a php page on the server it is very slow to load. ( about 10secs ).

After the first php page has loaded, if I acces another page soon after the first (<10secs), it loads almost instantaniously. But if I wait too long before opening the next page, it also takes allong time to load.

so if I stay on 1 page for longer than approx. 10secs the next page takes a long time to load.

This seems very strange to me, does anyone have any ideas as to what is going wrong, or how I could go about diagnosing the problem.

Thanks
Murray

Other insteresting and possibly helpfull information:

-HTML pages load very quickly
-CPU & Memory under no strain at any time during the procedure.
-Exaclty the same problem occurs for every user, if more than one user is accessing the server symultainously.
-not using any proxy servers
-Same problem when accessing page though windows or linux.
-Have tested with many different php scripts so am sure it is not a problem with the script.

It may be a module loading unloading thing going on, how does mod_php work with apache ?

you might look into the settings for apahce and you may not have PHP setup correctly.
