Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

Are there (command line or GUI) tools that i can use to edit pdf file? By edit, I mean such operation as inserting, extracting, deleting page etc. Maybe also extracting say a rectangular range from a pdf file?
Basically, features that I find in Professoional version of Acrobat, which doesn't seem to have a linux port
the only way i know is to use pdftops from http://www.foolabs.com/xpdf/
to convert pdf to ps for editing
then open with http://www.scribus.net http://www.scribus.org.uk/
it's better at just creating new pdfs but can import one ps page at a time i think
comes with tutorial and manual
then export pdf from scribus
edit: pdftops is in with the xpdf thingy

I ended up doing the following:
1) convert pdf to ps (pdf2ps) -- perhaps unnecessary
2) use GIMP to copy/paste out a region I want
3) save/export as ps
4) then use gs program to combine the pages together into one file
In particular, text2pdf is a command line, but I find it
alittle adequate for my works. Maybe bluefish, quanta,
or nvu might do (and their links on the website).
