What's your camera's model?
You may try if it's working. Just install the Cheese program and try to run it. You can install it by opening you console and typing:
Code:
sudo apt-get install cheese
. If everything is alright then run this program and you will see your camera picture.

if that does not work? post the output of command
Code:
lsusb
then do a google search for the usb ids...with linux....and you are looking for the kernel modulename to load

When you know that....run
Code:
lsmod | grep googlesearchmodulename
if zero hits...load it with root powers

sudo modprobe googleserchmodulename

eg mine is called uvcvideo

are you using maslick or my advice in thanking?

either way post the output to 2 commands....lsusb....and what is your modulename

2) alsamixer can help unmute mic for device and raise levels

3) can you detail which software you are running....or want activity you need
eg do you just want to record yourself? or videochat?...do you need skype?
