Patching the Kernel

I've never upgraded a kernel before, but I would like to install the openMosix to turn my PCs into a cluster system. I found a tutorial on how to upgrade the kernel from source, but what do I do if I just want to install one patch?

I have Slack9 (just updated everything via swaret)

Thank you in advance
