Partitioning

Got a problem with finding "boot.ini" on my computer!
Anyone got an idea for:

1) Where to find "boot.ini"
I only found tmuninst.ini. When I open it,
I get:
[Status]
Success=1

2)How do I partition?
3)Which Linux do I instal!?!
4)Where do I get Mandrake's Extension CD?

Not sure about the boot.ini if you talking about it on Win2K.

1. Partitioning, you can use fdisk, or disk druid that comes with some Linux distro's. You can go with retail partitioning tools such as Partition Magic or there are others.
2. I will leave the distro up to you, if your new, might want to start out with Mandrake.
3. Have you checked out Mandrake site, or you can try a iso site you can download the image from like at www.linuxiso.org

Thumbs up where to finf boot.ini

in win2k go to:

settings -> control panel then select FOLDER OPTIONS

select the "VIEW" tab and do the following:

PUT A CHECK ON:

1. show hiden files and folders

UNCHECK:

1. hide file extensions of known file types
2. hide protected operating system files

then do a search on "boot.ini" and VOILA! its there

Thanks!

BTW, got any idea how to choose between the two OS?

I want to choose at the beginning of each startup session. Right now, I've got to boot from the boot disk for Linux to work...

Thanks in advance!!!

choosing ur OS

yes

get a program called "bootpart" to modify ur boot.ini
www.winimage.com. once u set it up, it runs in DOS shell.

if u type c:\ bootpart <enter> u will see a list of all ur partitions:

C:\BOOTFILE>BOOTPART
Boot Partition 2.20 for WinNT (c) 1995-98 G. Vollant (info@winimage.com)
WEB : http://www.winimage.com and http://www.winimage.com/bootpart.htm
Add partition in the Windows NT Multi-boot loader
Run "bootpart /?" for more information

0 : C:* type=6 (BIGDOS Fat16), size = 1044193 KB
1 : C: type=a (OS/2 Boot Manag.), size = 8032 KB
2 : C: type=5 (Extended), size = 8032 KB
3 : C: type=7 (HPFS/NTFS), size = 8001 KB
4 : D: type=6 (BIGDOS Fat16), size = 261104 KB
5 : D: type=5 (Extended), size = 769024 KB
6 : D: type=7 (HPFS/NTFS), size = 102384 KB
7 : D: type=5 (Extended), size = 369664 KB
8 : D: type=7 (HPFS/NTFS), size = 369648 KB
9 : D: type=83 (Linux native), size = 296944 KB

Note : Extended partitions (type 5) are the only partitions that can contain
other partitions. It's not useful to add extended partitions to the NT boot
menu !
The * after C: means that partition 0: is the active partition.

Now, you add the Linux partition:

C:\BOOTFILE>BOOTPART 9 BOOTLINX.BIN Linux

NOTE the number "9" (this is LINUX) and remember to choose LINUX NATIVE. mine had a "*" and type=83 which is normally the correct one.

The next time you boot, the Windows 2000 menu will show Linux

NOTE that this has created an entry in ur boot.ini (check)

hope this helps

m khan
