Got it!!!!!!!!! Turns out the libglib-2.0.la linker file had been patched when I installed Pango 1.6.0! That's why it returned Glib 2.6.0. The header was set right, but the linker was linking to the old glib files (which I wiped out). GTK 2.6 installed perfectly without a hitch!!!

thanks you two I got it working now

Hey you two,

I had the same errors:

/home/trancelf/downloads/gtk/pango-1.8.0/pango/.libs/lt-pango-querymodules: error while loading shared libraries: /home/trancelf/downloads/gtk/pango-1.8.0/pango/.libs/libpango-1.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_fopen
make[3]: *** [install-data-local] Error 127
make[3]: Leaving directory `/home/trancelf/downloads/gtk/pango-1.8.0/modules'
make[2]: *** [install-am] Error 2
make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/trancelf/downloads/gtk/pango-1.8.0/modules'
make[1]: *** [install-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/trancelf/downloads/gtk/pango-1.8.0/modules'
make: *** [install-recursive] Error 1

I followed your thread and after working on this pango problem it turns out all I had to do was uninstall the old glib2 with

rpm -e --nodeps glib2

I"m going to try uninstalling the old pango as well, wish me luck, last time I did this my whole system crapped out, but hey, I'm just happy I finally got pango 1.8 to install, gives me hope in getting this whole GTK installed on my SuSE 9.1 box. If someone else got it working then I know it works.
