Panel-like terminal app?

I've gotten my applications on keyboard shortcuts or the desktop menu, but I still use xterm in the place of a file browser (can't find one I like). But I never need the whole window taking up screen real estate, so I was wondering if there was some sort of terminal program that could sit at the bottom of the screen like a panel for when I need to type the occasional whatnot.

Or is there some window border-less translucent terminal app that would run right on my root window? I always see that sort of thing in demo screenshots, but I don't know which package it is or how to configure it such.

Thanks a lot! I've been searching Google with no luck..

Try Tilda. It sits on top of the screen just taking up a few pixels, but it can expand and show you a multi-line terminal.

Looks like it would be great if it worked!

I followed their instructions verbatim. I even installed vte as required. "tilda -C" brings up a config window, but when Tilda itself runs, it just brings uo an error in the xterm I run it from. "Gdk-WARNING **: gdk_property_get(): length value has wrapped in calculation (did you pass G_MAXLONG?)"

I'm running Openbox, so I just install GNOME/Qt packages as needed. Is there one I'm missing for this to work or something?

I don't know. I had that running on my OpenBox/fbpanel setup with no problem at all. Anyway, if you search the Gentoo forums I'm sure you will find some information. That's where I found Tilda originally.
