Out of Ram problem.

I am currently trying to get linux to install onto a Dual Pentium Pro 200 system with 128mb of RAM. I have never actually installed anything onto a Dual proc system and didn't think it would be any different. I have tried redhat 8 and was unsuccessful at that. I have also tried 7.1 from a boot disk using expert mode, however nothing works.

System Specs:
Compaq Proliant 5000
Dual Pent Pro 200 w/ 512k cache
128mb of ECC RAM
2 int 4.3gb scsi drives in RAID 0
6 ext 4.3gb scsi drives in RAID 5

that's the hard part

"Out of RAM" is the only error message I get.

I am now finally getting Win 2K to install. If it works I will try to reinstall Redhat 8 to see if the changes that the bios setup made are what was wrong.

The BIOS isn't accessible via normal means. You must use a floppy disk set to make changes to the setup or have a cd that I don't have.

Lightbulb So heres the basic breakdown

Dont fret this problem drove me crazy.

For some reason the Compaq Proliant 5000 Server breaks the memory into not two but three parts. (you can break it down into two parts using "exactmap" or "linux mem" but i noticed it runs weird.)

You say you have 128 mb of ram? No problem.

Enter this command at the setup prompt.

"linux mem=exactmap mem=640k@0k mem=15m@1m mem=112m@16m"

If you upgrade to 256 mb of ram you will have to change command line to:

"linux mem=exactmap mem=640k@0k mem=15m@1m mem=240m@16m"

It's a really weird breakup but it works.
If you get RH 9 to work drop me a line. I had cdrom problems and got frustrated.

Hope this helps.

I haven't worked on this system in a while but I hope to eventually get back to it. I really want to find another pent pro 200 and vrm module for it so I can make it into a quad system. I was able to get rh8 to install just fine. At the current moment I don't remember how though. I will try and look it up sometime soon.
