Oracle 9i installation in RED Hat 9.2

i have tried to installation th client side to the RH9.2, but fail to connect the server at the end.
when i use sqlplus , it display following error:

ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
ORA-27101: shared memory realm does not exist
Linux Error: 2: No such file or directory

One of the reason may be come from installation.
I find that before running the "runInstaller" it needs to set the server/client env. As i just need to install the client side in my working computer, i just type "export DISPLAY=localhost:0.0" only. I don't know it is wrong or not.

I find from the installation guide, it needs to use the Oracle Server side to set the env. like:

Step 1:E.g. allow "oracleserver" to display X information to your desktop PC "yourdesktop": yourdesktop:user$ xhost +oracleserver

Step 2: From the console of your Oracle server "oracleserver"you are logged into, execute the following command as user "oracle":
oracleserverracle$ export DISPLAY=yourdesktop:0.0

As i can't touch with the oracle server directly, i just want to set all in client, but fail again and again. Still can't connect the server.

I really don't know the main problem of it .....can anyone help? ialready wasted a lot of time in that provlem.
Thx alot for ur help....!!!!!

are u trying to install Oracle server or Oracle Client ??? I cannot make that out from ur post, kindly clarify.

Anyways, If it is a Oracle server installation, and u r trying to install it remotely, then yes, you will have to export the display of your Server machine to the PC from where u r trying to perform a remote installation.

1. First, you need to open permission on your local machine to accept a network connection.

As root, give the command

xhost + ip-address-of-your-oracle-server

2. Now export the X Window session from your Oracle Server PC to your local PC

as user oracle, give the command

export DISPLAY=<ip-address-of-your-LOCAL-PC>:0.0

Now, you will be able to run the 'runinstaller' script on Oracle Server remotely from your local PC

For Oracle Client, there will be a separate CD, and you have to install it on the machine you wish should connect to your oracle server.

Regards

Amit

firstly of all, thanks for ur help.

In fact, i just want to install the client program of Oracle 9i. I have installed the OCCI, OCI and OEM. After that i also crate the tnsnames.ora and sqlnet.ora file under the netork /admin folder. But when i use sqlplus or netca, i still can't connect the databasse to perform sql statement. I can confirm the client program has connected to the Oracle server.

The step i have done:
1. Installation of the client programof Oracle 9i ( Network, OEM, OCCI, OCI, JVM)
2. start run the SQLplus , FAIL
3. set the tnsnames.ora and sqlnet file
4 run the SQLplus again, FAIL

I don't know what mistakes i have made or any step is missing......

Thx for ur help

There r 3 files that you will need to look out for

1. tnsnames.ora
2. listener.ora
3. sqlnet.ora

You will first need to start the LISTENER, change appropriate details in listener.ora. You may also need to copy the file tnsnames.ora and listener.ora from the server to oracle client.

Whatever service name u want to use, must be defined in these files.

You will need to put the IP address and port of your oracle server in tnsnames.ora

In SQLNET.ORA, try replacing EZCONNECT with HOSTNAME

further, you may try and locate some sample files for sqlnet.ora, tnsnames.ora and listener.ora from google and experiment.

Regards,

Amit
