Opera 7.51 video plugins

Is anyone using Opera 7.51 and able to play embedded video files?
I was using 7.50 until last week until my PC got formatted (don't ask) and since I reinstalled Linux - Mdk 10 Official - and Opera 7.51 I can't view any video files - RM, AVI, MPEG, QT in Opera. Both mplayerplugin and plugger are installed and recognised in the plugin list of Opera and plugger is the associated handler for all the relevant file types. I tried changing it to mplayerplugin but the result is identical - a blank white page. Is there any way of checking if Opera is trying to play the file and failing?

probably opera was not told how to handle MIME type. i'm using mozilla. so i'm not sure how opera works.

in mozilla go to Edit->Preference. From there look for Helper Applicaton under Navigator.

try tinkering with opera settings or preferences and look for something about MIME type.

I'm having the same problems under mozilla, what exactly do you have to put under the mime types, and what do you do if the webpage wants to open the video or sound files in the actuall player?

all rite.. about the mime type and making mozilla know how to handle it. follow these instructions.

1) first of all u must have an application/program that can handle the file type.
ex: pdf = xpdf
ex: ogg = xmms

2) open up www.linspire.com/file_types/filetypes.php and www.whatis.com in a new tab for reference later.

3) at the linspire website, click on any sample file that u wanna test. for our purpose click the Adobe Acrobat File link.

4) if mozilla didnt know what to do with it, it will popup a window and ask u what to do with it.
here u can determine what is the MIME type by looking at the line that says "You have chosen to download a file of type: application/pdf from bla bla bla..." the application/pdf is the MIME type.

5) now u can either let mozilla do the MIME type association automatically or u urself do it manually.

6) to let mozilla do it, at the same popup window, choose the "Open using an application" radio button. and click button choose.. then select the appropriate program to handle this MIME type. in this example, we'll let xpdf to handle this MIME type. browse to where xpdf reside and click the open button. and... ur done! thats all.

7) if u want to do it manually, write down the MIME type and then cancel the popup window.

8) next go to menu Edit->Preferences.

9) at the preferences window, click Helper Applications under Navigator. to confirm, right cloumn will now have a heading of Helper Applications.

10) from here click the New Type button. a New Type window will popup.

11) feed it with this information based on our example..
Description of type: Portable Document File (i got this from whatis.com site)
File extension: pdf (refer to linspire.com site)
MIME type: application/pdf (how do we know this? refer to step 4)
Application to use: browse for xpdf (in my system xpdf is located at /usr/bin/ yours may differ)

12) when all field are filled click on Ok.

13) thats it... we're done. go to www.linspire.com/file_types/filetypes.php and click the Adove Acrobat File link again. depending on ur preference.. it will either open up xpdf automatically or ask u wether to download the pdf file. its ur choice.

i hope u find this helpfull. i try my best to make this as simple as possible. post here if u still need help.

btw, on the linspire site, i was able to play any sound or video link except the inline link. anybody wanna help with this one?

Were the mplayer codecs installed in /usr/local/lib/codecs/ before installing mplayer?

RPM may handle this in the correct order, but if you compile mplayer you must have the codecs in place before compiling the executable.

(edit) You might want to try playing some files with mplayer from the cli to see what errors it throws. It's pretty verbose! (edit)

I tried setting up file-handling via that linspire page, and most of the external players work OK (except for Real Player, which won't work under any circumstances) but when I tell the plugins to handle the file I just get dead black screens. Playing files from the CL is no prob with mplayer but this can't be done with the emvedded files you find on the likes of Quicktime's trailer page or the IMDB trailers.

realplayer cant open up the link? try feeding the link manually by going to the menu File->Open Location.

as for the mplayer, i think u should try that with gmplayer. its the gui version of mplayer. or u can try xine.

i do have problem with some site that had inline audio/video link as the example in linspire page.

howdy folks..

regarding the problem about mozilla cant play inline videos, i went to http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/linux.html and found the answer there. just download the mplayerplug-in and tada it works like a charm. i must mention that mplayerplug-in requires gecko-sdk.

this is how i do it.

1) download mplayerplug-in-266.tar.gz
2) download gecko-sdk-i686-pc-linux-gnu-1.6.tar.gz
3) untar gecko-sdk to any path u want.. i untar it at /usr/share. then i chown gecko-sdk's directory to owner root
4) untar mplayerplug-in
5) then run "./configure --with-gecko-sdk=/path/to/gecko-sdk --enable-x"
6) if there's no error then run "make"
7) then, cp mplayerplug-in.so to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/ (* the path here may vary depending on ur system)
8) and cp mplayerplug-in.xpt to /usr/lib/mozilla/components/ (* the path here may vary depending on ur system)
9) restart mozilla.. and test it out at the linspire page.

enjoy..

I have plugger installed in Opera 8.01 and it works on almost all the test sites but not out on the "internets" where I need it. It isn't playing any asf-asx-asp or even wax files. Got all the files on the Linspire site except wmx. What will fix it? Thanks.
