OpenVPN on Ubuntu 8.04

I have just installed Ubuntu 8.04 and installed OpenVPN package. What I notice is that it doesn't create a tun/tap device each time I connect to the VPN server. I have also installed bridge-utils and my ovpn configuration says it should route network traffic thru OpenVPN gateway. I have searched the google and it looks like there has been some bug on OpenVPN and Network Manager of Ubuntu 8.04. Does anyone of you tried a work around for this? Thanks.

Here's my config anyway:

# Use the following for simple connections:
port 443
dev tap
secret static.key.txt
proto tcp-client

Shoot when I use OpenVPN it appears that I get connected but my VPN connection disconnects and reconnects regularly like clockwork. Have yet to figure it out. Weird I say.

ANy help from anyone out there.
