Unhappy OpenOffice No Longer Working

I have SuSE 9.1 with KDE 3.3 and what ever version of OpenOffice that comes with SuSE.

I don't use OpenOffice that often so I don't know when it stopped working, but when I try to start it up it shows it loading in the task bar for about 10 seconds than it just stops and goes away the program doesn't even load. I thought maybe the files in the /home directory might be screwed up so I created a new user to have a fresh slate. I tried starting OpenOffice and I get the OOo-wrapper messages window (which is normal for a new user) and I get this error message in the window.

Starting /opt/OpenOffice.org/program/soffice...
soffice.bin: kdecore/kcmdlineargs.cpp:159: static void KCmdLineArgs: :init(int, char**, const KAboutData*, bool): Assertion `argsList == 0' failled.

it's not that hard to just reinstall it. it sounds like trying to fix the current one your computer will be harder than a reinstall.

Another possibility is your configuration file in

$HOME/.openoffice

is messed up. Trying moving this to a dummy
directory and call up Oo. If still bad, you might
want to reinstall Oo.

If you do end up reinstalling, you might want to
save configuration saved in this directory. Again,
move htis to a dummy directory, and then, reinstall
Oo. Then put the old .openoffice back.

i'm having the same problem. I uninstalled every reference to the application, including some hidden files in my home directory, and reinstalled. I still get the crash as soon as i open the application. I explored the possibility of my install medium being corrupted, and downloaded the RPM's from the Suse FTP, and still had the same problems.. I'm just going to download the newer version from OOo's website and install that instead....

Not sure if its an issue with KDE3.3 or what.. I did log a support request with Suse. I'll be sure to post back if i get an answer.

i've seen a million problems lately with SuSE and certain programs not working, especially openoffice and some instant messaging programs. there's something wrong with the SuSE openoffice package. like mykrob said, go to the OOo website and download the compressed file. uncompress it and launch the installer from the "setup" file - it'll be much easier that way.

I installed the newer one from OOo's site, and it works with no problem whatsoever. Not as pretty as the Suse version, but i'll take functionality over visuals.

I think I can solve your problem. It happened with the upgrade to KDE 3.3 using the Suse rpm's. It happened to everyone, not just you. Suse didn't test it very well, and ooo stopped working.

Some of us got the newest .tar.gz files and upgraded to 1.1.2. Got them from the Open Office site. That fixed the problem, and upgraded at the same time. Don't forget to remove the old files first.

However, the easy fix was really just changing the wrapper that starts the various programs in the suite (look under the icon properties) and change it to the proper path where the executables lie. Somehow the wrapper stopped working. Read this whole thread. It's from the Suse Usenet group.

I will say that the upgrade to 1.1.2 worked perfectly on Suse 9.1 with KDE 3.3 installed, but DO read the README file that comes with it, (or maybe it was on the web site, I think it was) cause it has to be followed precisely.

Thanks, it's working now. I removed the old one that comes with SuSE and downloaded the new OOo from the OOo site and every thing is working. I may think about switching distro's. I might give Mandrake another try. SuSe has been getting on my nerves lately with certain programs crashing a lot especially Kopete and Gaim. Not to mention it's hard as f**k to find precompiled programs I can just click and install on SuSE. Every time there's a program I want I have to precompile and do all kinds of fancy crap to get it to work on SuSE when it's usually easier to install on other distros like Red Hat or Mandrake.

Ok, new problem. I have no OpenOffice settings directory in my home directory. And OpenOffice usually creates one if I don't have it. Well, it's not doing that and I can't save any of my settings.

What should I do?

i always install it to my home directory, just a matter of preference. i'm not quite sure how to get it to work in /opt, so i guess the only solution i can offer is to install it in /home. maybe a symlink to the home directory would work.
