Unhappy Opening/Unziping .tar.gz files


im a linux
i have recently installed red hat 9 but i dont know how to unzip .tar.gz files!!!
so i cant install now netbeans, firefox!!!

Simply:
tar -xzf file.tar.gz

Ok here's how:
In a console do the following:
tar -zxvf <filename>
This will untar the file and create a directory (usually the same name or very similar to the filename)
cd <directory just created>
./configure
make
make install (if you were not root for the previous steps su to root)
make clean
You're done!!
Good luck
Note: When you enter the new directory, read all readme, etc. files as they contain valuable information.

but i have a problem
i tried the make command with how you showed me.
changedirectory worked
but on the make install it shows:
make: *** No rule to make target 'install'. Stop.

that is what it says

EDIT: never mind, i did it

Installation instructions will vary depending on the software - read the documentation that came with the package.
