Open source alternative to quark?

hi. i saw an ad in the paper for a graphic designing job. One of the requirements is Quark experience. I've never used quark so i don't know if they will even look at me but if i can make a portfolio using concepts from quark then maybe they will take me. So my question is is there a quark open source alternative? thank you for your time. I appreciate it.

Well there's Scribus but it doesn't approach Quark's full range of functionality. Question is do you need the full range?

If the outfit you want to work at asks for Quark you'd better have some Quark experience. Or InDesign, or whatever the DTP kids use these days. But if you have to start building a portfolio now I doubt you'll have some decent work to show on time for the interview

Hey, enthusiasm is to be applauded, just moderated with some realism

I had a quick once-over of Scribus and it seems like a decent program:

This is an interesting (if old) article:

thanks. That was an interesting article. I had heard of scribus before but i wasn't too sure what quark was so i didn't know scribus was in the same catergory of quark. I don't know if i'll attempt for that that job anymore but i'll still using scribus to build a portfolio if there is ever another job posting like it.
