Exclamation nVidia driver woes

Just got the nvidia drivers to compile on my 2.6.5 kernel and I'm still having trouble.

They work sparsly, so to speak. Heres an example: I finally got them to work so I started playing Neverwinter Nights and while creating a character my system locked up. No biggie right? Just restart and startx.... Well that didnt work the drives did what they decided to do before -- that being make a black screen with random symboys on it.

AND to top it off it overwrites my XF86config file.

Ok, thats fixed easily enough: chmod 0555 /etc/X11/XF86Config

Now when I run startx as root intsead of everything locking up (using the nvidia NOT the nv drivers) and making ramdom characters it loads X (yay) and I can read the X log

Code:
(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (NVIDIA XFree86 driver not found)
That doesnt seem so bad etther. HOWEVER if I run startx as a normal (not root) user I get the garbled screen of death and have to restart.

To top it off just earlier today I changed from "nv" to "nvidia" and it worked! I didnt use the puter since I had someone over but I came back about an hour and a half later and it was locked up, I could move the curser but that was it.

If you guys want a log after any of these events just ask same with the XF86Config

Any help is gladly appreciated. Er even just tell we what kernel options you are using for images. Wether you have agpart as a module or built in, stuff like that. Thanks!

I havo no idea why but it seems to keep overwriting all the files it makes (the drivers) and corrupting them to nothing but a string of "@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^"

Any one have an idea?

I installed X.Org to see if that would help and it did. It recreated the drivers because it (the Nvidia installer) thought I drasticly changes my system.

This is frustrating

it seems you need agpart compiled as a module for nvidia drivers to detect nvidia.o.. it's weird how some distros have this option as a module while the kernel from kernel.org doesn't..

edit: you have to enable module loading in the kernel for apgpart to be a module.. but on another note you don't enable apgpart if you're installing the nvidia drivers from nvidia's website..
