I bet this has been asked alot, but Im thinking of partitioning my ubuntu with a debian to decide which is better...but anyways can someone tell me if debian linux can read AND write to NTFS partitions (aka my windows partition).

You can read an NTFS partition but not write in a secure way as long as your kernel is compiled with ntfs support.
In most distros this option is enabled.

If you want to write in NTFS the best way is throu captive ntfs by using the windows ntfs drivers:

NTFS write support is supposed to be pretty good in 2.6.15.

cs-cam is right NTFS write support is considered as safe since 2.6.15... so you don't care about using Ubuntu, Debian or another distro... The important thing is to run a 2.6.15 (or higher) kernel.

Note: there's also 2 other projects to write NTFS
-http://wiki.linux-ntfs.org/doku.php?id=ntfsmount which implements a driver in user space thanks to FUSE. It allows to create files whereas it is not possible for the moment with the current kernel driver.
-captive project... but you need windows drivers (so require a Windows License

) and it seems to be very slow for read/write access...

thx ill try that after I get debian installed. Im downloading it on bit torrent right now =D
