No sound/Zsnes/Ubuntu 8.04

I'm not sure why, but whenever I try to install Zsnes sound does not work. No matter whether I run it as root or as a regular sound doesn't work. When I run it from the command line, I get an error (I'll post later as I am at work right now) saying something along the lines of it not being able to access alsa. That command seems to happen only when I run it as a regular user from the terminal. When I run it as sudo it doesn't come up.

If anyone has any idea why this might happen, please let me know. I'll post the exact error later.

Thanks in advance,

Brandon

Edit: this happens when I install Zsnes from the Ubuntu repositories. I can't exactly compile it because there are certain things that need to be installed (libpng, sdl) and Ubuntu doesn't seem to find them.

When I installed Zsnes in Fedora (it was compiled) everything worked great. Not sure what's wrong with the .deb package.

I appear to not be get any errors when opening up zsnes from the command line as sudo or a regular user. Not sure what the problem is. It even says it opens up alsa and the audio channels just fine. No sound comes out though.

Sound is enabled through Zsnes, speakers are on and plugged in and volume is up.

Any ideas?

Solution

I found a fix for the sound problem. Running:
Code:
zsnes -ad sdl
from the command line worked perfectly for me.

I found the fix here:

Hey,

I know it's a little late, but that's one hell of a find. Thanks.

Lightbulb Sound glitches

I found myself having a slightly different problem with ZSNES under Ubuntu 8.04: sound is present but glitches, it is scratchy.

After reading a few posts on this forum and elsewhere, I found that setting ZSNES to FULL screen instead of in WINDOWED mode fixes the problem for me.

Quite simple, but effective, I hope this can help someone.

I know this thread is old, but if it's still open, maybe someone can benefit from this information.

Dave Cradock posted a workaround in the Ubuntu Forums thread titled "ZSNES: No sound at all?".

I tried it and it worked. I'm running Mageia GNU/Linux. This may apply to all distributions because the file that must be edited is in the user's Home folder.
  1. First, close ZSNES if it is open.
  2. You must edit the following configuration file for ZSNES: /home/yourname/.zsnes/zsnesl.cfg (Replace the text yourname with your real username.)
  3. You can open zsnesl.cfg using gEdit Text Editor.
  4. Search for a line that should read: libAoDriver="auto"
  5. Edit the line so that it reads: libAoDriver="sdl"
  6. Save the file and close it.
  7. Open ZSNES and you should have the sound working. The configuration forces ZSNES to use SDL.

I hope this information helps. Please, pass it on to other forums where you may be registered.
