Newsreader for Linux

I am new to Linux, just loaded SUSE 9.1 after running Windows for years. I was using Newsbin Pro with Windows to download binaries from Newsgroups. What is a good Linux Newsreaders that will download binaries? Thanks in advance.

Mike

While that is a great link and I may look carefully at it in future - I just wanted to add my personal recommendation*: I use the Slack bundled Pan - it takes a little getting used to if you're used to something else, but I believe it is fairly similar Newsbin Pro - though that is from memory of some screenshots

However, as with most things in linux, it'll be a case of trying out a few - hopefully you're not on a premium service (or at least have access to some sort of free service) so that you can download the group headers a few times without using up your monthly limit :)

Good luck,

Steve

* Not that anyone really cares about my personal recommendation... :D

PAN is nothing like Newsbin, it's very simular to Forte Agent. I have spent countless hours looking for a good, hell, even decent binary downloader for Linux like Newsbin but as of yet I haven't found one. If you do a search you will find I'm not alone in looking, even the official Newsbin forums ask for a Linux port.

Many have claimed they got Newsbin to work great with WINE so you may give that a shot. Even the creator of Newsbin uses WINE to make it work.

This is one of the many reasons I haven't fully converted to Linux yet.

The best way to download binaries from usenet IMHO is to get the $0.50/week subscription to NewzBin (www.newzbin.com), then get NZBGet from Sourceforge (http://sourceforge.net/projects/nzbget/). This saves you from downloading headers constantly, and makes it super easy to browse and download.

1. Find what you want on Newzbin
2. Download an NZB file for it
3. Run nzbget <nzbfile>

I've run Agent under Wine and didn't mind it, but did have occasional problems. I like NZBGet because it's CLI only and doesn't hog memory. Plus, if you're on a premium service, you never have to download headers.
