New to redhat. need help with changing folder permisions

Hi. i'm new to redhat and have a problem.

Everytime i try to intall a package using the "dos-like" cosole thing, using the "make install" command, it wants to install it to /usr/local/lib.

I always get an error saying "permission denied".

Now i used the GUI console to try to change the permissions for those folders and it says that i can't change the permission because i am not the owner.

How on earth do i install programs? Someone please help me. This is all new to me.

Hi there vinpor!!!

Welcome to LinuxQuestions.org. Logged as user, the only folder that you are able to make changes is /home/user/ and everything inside that folder. To be able to run "make install" you've to be "root". Think about root as the administrator in Windows, but he is the only who are able to install and remove programs, as well as modify any configuration outside the /home/user folder. Needless to say, it's dangerous to be root all the time. Wherever you need to perform a root operation, use the "su" command. You will be prompted by the password.

For a good understanding of installing programs under Linux, I'd recommend reading this thread:

Good luck!

When you installed RedHat it will have asked you to specify the root password during the install.

If you can't remember what you typed in, reboot and edit your Grub boot command line adding single at the end of it. This will boot you into single user mode which will automatically log you in as root. Then you can use passwd root to reset the root password. Reboot and continue where you were before.
