New Clone SSD Drive Will Not Boot

I want to image my current drive to an SSD. I've cloned my boot/OS partition (everything except /home) to the new drive, first using dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/dev/sdb1, then using the Clonezilla live CD.

In both cases, after BIOS, the hard disk light comes on, but no boot or other activity. When I boot from the old drive, everything is fine, and when I mount the partition on the new drive, all the files and directories are there as one would expect.

I did grub-install on the dd copy (after it failed to boot up), and watched while Clonezilla claimed it successfully put grub in the MBR.

Any thoughts on what I'm missing?

TIA,
doctorcisco

'dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/dev/sdb1', followed by 'dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb bs=446 count=1' should work most of the time.

Cheers,
