network user data logging (using iptables)
Hi all,
I have just added a third member to our home network who is now also sharing our internet connection via my Fedora (core 5) server, using iptables.
Since we have a data usage limit set by our ISP, I now need to start logging data usage for each ip address...
To be more specific, three internal ip addresses used by the three users on the network (including myself), and one other internal ip address of course belongs to the server itself (all static ip addresses used on the network obviously)
There are two NIC's installed in the server - one for the internal side, and the other connected to the cable modem.
I've been looking at using iptraf to output a log file, then read the data from that... the only way i can see to do it is to write my own program to read the log files to show me the data usage of each user - this would be time consuming, and I need to come up with a solution fast.
Anybody have any ideas on how to easily log internet data usage on a system like this?
Is there a way to output data from iptables rather than using iptraf?
Any ideas at all?
Regards,
Steve
