Netscape Navigator on a 64bit system

Not sure if this is the right place to post but I am running Slackware 13.37 64 bit and been trying to get an old version of Netscape Navigator on there and having problems.

I know its not the install script, as it is rather short and works on an earlier distribution.

I guess my question is; do 32bit binariers run on a 64bit OS?

Is building from source an option?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

The answer is No, and maybe Yes.

32 bit binaries will not run on a Slackware pure 64 bit system.

Yes, they can run If you set the system up as Multi-lib. See this link if you are interested in going Multi-lib.

I haven't seen Netscape Navigator mentioned in these forums for about 10 years... Sure you need it?

Need it, no LOL, want it, yes. I have always had a wide choice of browsers on all my systems, I'm a bit nostalgic you see.

I'll check out the link though, thanks...

Have a look at Seamonkey. Its a lot like Netscape Navigator. At least it looks like it...

I think one of my pet hates is that firefox seems to have become a bit bloated from what it used to be and certainly after the 3.6*/4.0 release this seems to be the case. for me losing most of what attracted me to it in the first place.

You might try what I did. I downloaded all the old Netscape graphics and such and replaced the one's in Seamonkey. It produced a very convincing Netscape clone and is of the proper lineage. If you don't want the whole suite, you can go back to Seamonkey 2.2 or so and it still let you compile the standalone Navigator. This would result in a much more stable browser and hopefully satisfy your nostalgia (It did mine! I love the meteorite logo!).

Multilib support isn't that hard to set up. From http://connie.slackware.com/~alien/multilib/: issue the command:
lftp -c 'open http://slackware.com/~alien/multilib/ ; mirror 13.1' to download all the multilib packages then install them as per the instructions.

To compile 32-bit programs, run . /etc/profile.d/32dev.sh first. Easy!

I had to enable multilib support when I set up Skype and Skype Call Recorder. It turned out to be much more straightforward than I thought it would be (thanks Bob).
