need help to recover data from ext3 hard disk

Recently, I reinstalled my centos machine.
Somehow, I forgot to backup one of the folders
which is useful to me. The new system is running.
During the installation process, I partitioned
and formatted a 250G HDD into several partitions.

The question now is: Can I still recover some
of the files? I know it's hard since the HDD has
been formatted. But I wish someone could give me
a hand before I give up. BTW, what's the best free
tool available to do this? Do I need another HDD
during recover?

Appreciate any advice.

We've all done this at some point...
There are numerous tools on the interweb that will do this. Try the UBCD Ultimate Boot CD, as that comes with the major ones. There is also a script here: http://home.fnal.gov/~muzaffar/undelete/README.html
that you can use on a functioning system, to retrieve anything marked for deletion.
It is best to install another harddisk for copying the data to.

Will give it a try tomorrow. One thing I need to know
is since I don't have an empty HDD now, may I use a HDD
that has data on it? Or, a 2G flash drive is good for this?
