i am using fedora 9 with gnome desktop and i have installled squirrelmail 1.4.17 in my system every thing is fine and it is working properly ,my question is that is there any other simple alternative for squirrelmail , i dont need any password encryption , just for installing in local network with basic features such as read, write, delete, folder support based on php webmail system any suggestions ? it will be more useful to me
IMHO squirrelmail is the simplest webmail application. You might take a look at openwebmail that is also simple.
Other software that provides webmail functionality, like roundcube, horde's IMP, or zimbra is more complicated, as those apps need also a database, or ldap to work.
I previously installed Nutsmail (you have to pay a bit for it) over an existing squirrelmail and loved it. Very nice GUI compared to base squirrelmail, but lacking in one feature, a vacation autoresponder. The support is non existent, emails get answered in the same calendar year. The forums got removed from the website and not put back.
Currently trying RoundCube, looks pretty sweet, but again, lacks a Vacation Auto Responder, so i'm in the process of trying to install some add-ons to it but struggling. The forums seem to be quite active.
I tried out Horde, and it was an awful experience, just trying to get it installed and running i gave up, the documentation was written for people that already knew how to install it.
I see that @mail has a supported version called Tuxedo, no database required, and pretty reasonable in price. I have not tried it out yet, but may do.
