need help for working of rtl8139D(L) driver.

I had written a network driver code for rtl8139D(L), ethernet controller, with open, stop, transmit, get stats and interrupt handler being the major fundamental device methods. The code seems to be working fine till I activate the device using "ifconfig up" as the module is inserting properly without any errors and calling open function after using ifconfig. Transmit and get stats function are often called around 5 times atleast, at the time of inserting.Is this expected?
The IP address also gets assigned successfully along with netmask and broadcast address. But when I try to ping my system from other systems in the network,"destination host unreachable" message is displayed. Also I'm unable to ping other systems from my system. It looks like my card is not recognised by the network. What could be the problem and what could be a possible solution for it? Awaiting ur replies.
