need help fixing grub

i have the right partitions set as ACTIVE, and the right harddrive set as bootable

grub will not start at all, this happens often when i insert windows XP cd, my grub seems to have prblems

grub does not start, after the BIOS screen thing, it just doesnt do anything, it sits at the second screen of the bios, with the little flashing "_" underline thing.

i am booting with a live cd, and i can acces my linux partition and i am in command line with the grub commands,

I tryied grub -install, but aparrantly you need much more than that to repair it

this is any info you might need to help

i have files that i found called,
grub.conf.old (this might be backup)
menu.lst.old
menu.lst
stage1
stage2

My hd setup is
/dev/hda1 windows (inactive)
/dev/hda2 SUSE linux (bootable and with grub)

Try grub-install /dev/hda, no space between "grub-install"

Try reading this page and see if there's something useful. As I said, I haven't worked much with grub...
