Nagios Startup Troubles

I just install Nagios 2.7 on my Dell server running Ubuntu Server Edition. I compiled all the necessary script and the -v command found no errors with my script. However, I am still receiving the message Error: "Could not read object configuration data!". I tried restarting apache and Nagios using the /etc/init.d/restart command and still had no luck. My main files are stores in /usr/local/nagios/etc/. Any reason why I would still receive this error? Any help is greatly appreciated.
