mythtv no sound nforce4 realtek onboard audio

I have Asus A8N-SLI mb w/ nvidia nForce4 chipset. The only place I cannot get sound is when viewing live tv through Mythtv. Sound works fine with tvtime. All other sound functionalities (DVD, MP3, MPEG) in mythTV work fine.

I've read some info that ALSA does not support the onboard Realtek ALC850 audio. I also read that S/PDIF may only work - but I have no idea how to configure.

Any suggestions?

asoundrc and alc850 poor quality sound

Hey all - this is a follow up on the last post.

I finally got sound working through mythtv - live tv. I have done a lot of configuring . . . but I think it had to do with the following post as it is directed to my audio chipset on my motherboard:

http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Asoundrc_alc850

The wiki indicates at the bottom that I should:
Quote:
Now, once the file is saved start/restart mythfrontend.

Go to Utilities/Setup -> Setup -> General and for Audio output device put ALSA:digital.
When I do so . . . I get no sound. If I leave the settings at:

Audio output device: /dev/dsp
Mixer device: dev/mixer

I still get sound - but it is terrible. It sounds like people are talking through a tunnel and there is crackling in the background. I'd really like to get rid of the tunnel sound . . . I would think there is a much higher quality sound setting.

Maybe it's the sound settings in the .asoundrc file?? I'm really not sure how to configure anything seeing that I'm a noob.

Any help would be greatly appreciated . . .

BJ
