Exclamation MySQL won't compile

I was just trying to install mysql under the new Libranet 2.8 os and I get errors.
Quote:
libmysql.c:1353: too few arguments to function `gethostbyname_r'

libmysql.c:1353: warning: assignment makes pointer from integer without a cast

make[2]: *** [libmysql.lo] Error 1

make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/bige/packages/mysql-3.23.56/libmysql'

make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1

make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/bige/packages/mysql-3.23.56'

make: *** [all] Error 2
Does Libranet 2.8 ship w/ a funky gcc release. I ran apt-get update and upgrade to no avail. Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Well you should go for MySQL 4.x since that is stable and 3.23.x .. try that one and post your results here again if it fails!

Well in Debian/Woody gcc 2.95.x is active. gcc 3.x is Debian/SID (= unstable). So I bet gcc is pretty faulty ... maybe do some report at the mysql team if you are 100% sure you can compile other programs like apache without any problem.

BTW: Why do you need to compile mysql at all? There are optimized packages available for download ...

well...

I wanted to compile from source b/c I like the control over configure option. I am kinda a newb so it helps me learn... i guess... just a preference. It isn't just w/ mysql tho. all kinds of apps have problems... I have posted in the Libranet forums so hopefully their staff can explain some things that we all should know.. Thanks for the insight markus, You are very helpful...
