mysql.sock missing

trying to run mysql it says:
ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock'
that's probably not so strange since that directory is empty.
tried to locate mysql.sock by
find / -name mysql.sock -print
with no result..
using RH7.2 with preinstalled mysql packages.
