mysql queries

currently i have an SQL database that takes info from another database. that info is queried from a few different systems. the problem is, while the SQL database is repopulating the systems that query the database can not access the database. I'm not sure if anyone knows SQL, but is there a way to fix this?
this leads me to wonder about going the mysql route. i know from using Mythtv that i can access the database even while its repopulating with new channel guide info.
would it work the same for my application.
any help would be appreciated.
thanks

What type of SQL database is this? It sounds like a locking problem.

You'll have to identify what is locking the database. There are a few different stored procedures that can be used with SQL 2005, google search them, you also have the option to use the SQL profiler.

As a shot in the dark, you can try changing the isolation level for the database and see if it helps.

ALTER DATABASE <database> SET READ_COMMITTED_SNAPSHOT ON;
