mysql problems running??

I just installed fedora core 3 final. And I have installed it over and over, and I cannot get mysql to run. it says cant find /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

it is installed... but just doesnt work. mysqladmin version gives me this message

Also, when I try to download the newer version of mysql like 4.0/4.1

and install it, it seems to install ok, if i remember, but when i run it, or when it trys to install, it gives me some garbage about invalid thread stack, that it asked for such thread stack and got another one?

Thanks in Advance,

I was having this problem for a while too. I tried tons upon tons of things to fix it, but ended up getting saved by this site:
