MySQL Aborted!

All,

Having issues with MySQL! Will not start! When I run "service mysql start" I get the error "start: Job failed to start"! I ran some recovery BASH scripts I had from before and was, when running the cmd "mysqld -u root -p --skip-grant-options" getting the error: "mysql error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)'" but after running the scripts now getting the error: "180508 13:51:37 [Warning] Ignoring user change to 'root' because the user was set to 'mysql' earlier on the command line"!

So then ran the cmd: "mysqld -u mysql -p --skip-grant-options" it says it started and gives a process number, but running "ps -A | grep mysql" or "ps -A | grep mysqld" nothing shows. and even running "ps -A | grep procnumber" shows no process. What do I need to fix this?

Found a HOWTO online that said the following command set would clear this but it also errors.

Code:
apt-get clean && apt-get -f install && apt-get update && apt-get upgrade
Attempting "Removal" does not work, so went to Synaptic Package Manager to re-install these packages and get this set of errors repeated for ever package selected there:

Code:
E: Unable to correct dependencies
E: Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.
I had to clear held packages once before, but do not remember how.

All help appreciated!

Cheers!

TBNK

Ok, so ran the commands:

apt-get update > /home/files/ag-update.txt && sudo apt-cache policy /home/files/ac-policy.txt && sudo apt-get -f install > /home/files/ag-fix.txt
Policy was empty, but here are the other 2:

Today 05-10-18

All,

So after running all the stuff to attempt purge, had to reboot! When I rebooted something in the purges totally destroyed Xwin, so had to do a recovery there then restore the KDE Desktop.

Today after recovery of Xwin & KDE, I ran:

Code:
aptitude -f install mysql mysql-client mysql-server-5.5 mysql-server mysql-common
Which open the config interfaces where I tried to set the root password, but then that failed with:

Code:
Unable to set password for the MySQL "root" user An error occurred while setting the password for the MySQL administrative user.

This may have happened because the account already has a password, or because of a communication problem with the MySQL server.

You should check the account's password after the package installation.

Please read the /usr/share/doc/mysql-server-5.5/README.Debian file for more information.
And these additional errors at the cmd line:

Code:

Then when I attempt the installs via Synaptic Package Manager, still get the "HELD" packages errors, but ran

Code:
dpkg --get-selections | grep hold
but that is showing no packages held!

Driving me crazy!

More Errors

All,

So per the error attempted to read the README.Debian file, but it is actually README>Debian.gz so had to run ARK and extra to a local readable directory.

I says run the cmds:

Code:
/usr/bin/mysql -u root -D mysql -e "update user set password=password('newpassword') where user='root'"
/usr/bin/mysql -u root -e "flush privileges"
but those produce the error:

Code:
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)
which was the original error I started with!

Anyway exhausted on this, so need help quickly as possible!

Bad bad bad bad bad HOWTOs

All,

After hours of research to solve this finding that over 95% of the HOWTOs on this subject just think your mysql stopped and a simple "restart" will fix this.

But when you keep getting errors on:
  1. Restart,
  2. Purge,
  3. Re-install,
  4. Install,
  5. and Ps -A | grep mysql ===> Shows nothing.
Then you know your have a serious problem to debug and nothing in the MySQL docs covers any of this, then you know you need real help.

Even the cmd:
Code:
dpkg --get-selections | grep hold
shows nothing, as no packages held;
But all the errors are telling you absolutely any apt-get commands will not run due to "held" packages, you need a guru.

Hope one of you know the answers I need!

Thanks!

More Info: Help Please

All,

Been battling an issue for 10 days now on my Aspire 7739 Laptop running Kubuntu 14.04 LTS. Wrote this up her originally om: 05/09

After hours of research to solve this finding that over 95% of the HOWTOs on this subject just think your mysql stopped and a simple "restart" will fix this, I'm going crazy. Been pounding on irc.freenode.net to attempt solutions from the gurus there. Nothing!

I keep getting errors on:
  1. service apache2 restart,
  2. service mysql restart/start/stop,
  3. apt-get purge (anything),
  4. apt-get install (anything),
  5. apt-get -f install (anything),
  6. apt-get reinstall (anything),
  7. Synaptic Package Manager.
Synaptic Package Manager always says the errors are due to held packages, but the cmd to show them:
Code:
dpkg --get-selections | grep hold
and
Code:
Ps -A | grep mysql
===> Shows nothing.

So this is a serious problem, broken mysql install which has either fragmented or incompatible packages and all the debug and other HOWTOs in the MySQL docs says nothing that covers any of this!

So you know I need real serious help.

The broken/held package errors appear on any apt-get commands so nothing in the normal apt-get can run and therefore all the normal fixes just don't work. I had this issue last year, when one of my customers upgraded to PHP7/MySQL7 and to support them attempted upgrade to MySQL7 and we found that the incompatibility kept breaking apt-get, so had to create a container, with newer OS and basically LAMP7.

With help from the gurus at: irc.freenode.net we found and cleared all the MySQL 7 stuff that was breaking things, but when this last software package installed (seopanel) wondering if some of the 7 stuff got back into the update pool? I don't remember where to find all this, so if you know, so I can open all the right files and clear this junk, would appreciate it.

Hope one of you know the answers I need!

Thanks!

Followup

All,

This issue was specific to version 14.04 LTS but pgrading to 18.04 LTS, so now irrelevant!

Cheers!

TBotNik, bumping is frowned upon, necrobumping doubly so.
