my select OS menu is playing up

i recently upgaded from ubuntu gutsy to hardy, when i upgraded a few annoying thins happened

1) on the select OS menu my default option is now the server edition not generic which i want

2) now every time i install some updates it puts a new kernel on

so now i can choose between about 11 different kernels and it is getting really cluttered and annoying, i also have XP on there.

please help
thanks

Edit /boot/grub/menu.lst. The first title section is the default OS or you can set the default with the default parameter.

You can remove all of the title sections for the kernels you no longer want to use.

http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/grub.html

You can use apt-get to uninstall the old kernels in /boot that you no longer need.

See:

man apt-get
