my own package managment?

hiho@ll

you all know a standard installation routine on linux:
./configure
make
make install

question:
how can i do my own package managment?

problem:
the only problem for now i have is php5.1 on a suse enterprise installation
this bug http://pear.php.net/bugs/bug.php?id=6154 makes it impossible for now to do a simple installation of php 5.1 on my suse (i can't make a rpm package because pear has some problems with installation path parameters)
so i thought about doing my own package management
the only thing i need to know is:
if i do a command "e.g. make install or something else" which files are installed, copied, moved, compiled etc. where

i need the paths, filenames of every file changed, updated, created ...
it would be perfectly to know do a backup before a file is replaced or something, so i could do my own uninstall ;-)

why i ask?
because of my "problem" and it would be interesting to know if it's hard to do my own package management on linux

btw: if i have to write my own prog for this, no problem
every answer will help (including which library could be used)

thx@ll

You could try using stow for this package:

i thought of something similar. an auto-tarballer i would call labratt.

it would support multiple compression formats and would somehow prompt user to select specific make targets.

if you sourceforge it i would like to help administer it.
