Multimedia Server

I am in the process of builidng a multimedia server. I want to be able to stream sound (or possibly video eventually) to the server from any other computer on the network. I know this can be done using JACK (correct me if i am wrong), but I need to find some cross platform solution as many on the network use Windows. Any suggestions? Does such a thing exist? The server will be running linux, I just need a client that can stream to a JACK (or JACK-like) server.

Thanks

vlc

videolan.org/vlc

multi-platform (actually better developed for windows than for *nix) and does *everything* straight out of the box.

cheers,
