mplayer works on redhat but not on gentoo


i compiled MPlayer-1.0pre3(and copied all the bin codecs) on RH9 and all works fine(except gmplayer). but for gentoo i ran 'emerge mplayer' and mplayer as well as gmplayer will run, but w/o sound. then i compiled from source butit didn't help.

any ideas will be greatly appreciated! thnx!
