Mplayer: Play 5.1 sound through headphones

I'm using Mplayer to play a DVD with 5.1 surround sound only. Most sound come through OK on my 2 speaker/headphone setup. However some sounds are far too faint.

Is there any way I can get Mplayer to perform a better conversion from 5.1 surround to 2 speakers, or are there other programs that can acommplish this?
