mplayer only plays video when started from the command line?

Hi,

Fresh install of Debian Lenny. MPlayer installed from debian-multimedia. I associated .avi files (for example; I tried an H264-encoded mkv too) with MPlayer in Thunar (I'm using XFCE). I then double-click the .avi; mplayer opens but then gives me "Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device." I click OK, and sound plays, but not video.

I close it and go to a terminal. I type mplayer filename.avi .. and the video plays fine.

What?

I don't use xfce and don't know thunar ... but does it try
to open gmplayer? That one uses its own settings. Try
invoking gmplayer from the command-line, and play with
the vo setting in it. If you get it working save the
settings and try from thunar again....

Cheers,
Tink

Thanks.. I had to run gmplayer with "-vo xv", and now double-clicking the file from thunar works.

I wonder what other settings gmplayer is missing?
