Read http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-a...-May/0097.html

It might get you a little further.

You may want to manually add an option what library and includes to use during compiling.

Thank you very much, 32 bit is now playing files (haven't tested audio yet)
but doesn't read DVD's, and the 64 doesn't install.
So getting somewhere, slowly

? Would re-compiling xine from source work better??

Are you trying to use MPlayer or Xine? If you're trying to use MPlayer, then Xine shouldn't be a factor at all, since the two programs are independent from each other. What are the error messages for the DVD's? It might just be a permissions problem. And if you can play videos, wha makes you unsure about sound? Is there no sound in the videos? If you can't hear anything when there's supposed to be sound, first check the mixers (OSS, ALSA, and whichever DE/WM you're using) and make sure that the channels you're trying to use aren't muted. Do audio CD's work with programs like workbone?

it all seems to be working now, so thank you all.

(The audio is working fine, I had disassembled my Hi Fi system which was why I had not tested it)

This is what worked for me:
> linux32 ./configure --as='as --32' --cc='cc -m32'
> make
> make install

By the way, how do I either

1) enable the gui? ( I presume that I'd have to uninstall & then re-install with enable gui )
How do I uninstall?

or

2) get Mplayer to show me a list of the tracks so I can know which ones to play. (the file manager doesn't really show me helpful track listings)

mplayer32 ://dvd ??

here's the output from mplayer as it runs

Okay, to uninstall, go back to the directory you installed mplayer from, and as root issue the command "make uninstall" (without the quotes)

To enable the GUI:

add --enable-gui

then finish compiling and installing as normal.

When you want to use the GUI version of MPlayer, use the command gmplayer, and it'll pop up. Keep in mind that you'll have to install a skin for it (You can install it after you finish installing MPlayer again). Just make sure that its directory is /usr/local/share/mplayer/Skin/Default

Now for the DVD. I'm guessing that your video out device might not be a working one. I know that when I watch DVD's, I have to have my vo driver be X11, none of the other ones work or work as well. The option can be found in GMPlayer's preferences, or you can change it manually by command in the console with
Code:
mplayer -vo (whichever driver you want to use for video out)

You do not have to uninstall to just compile for additional options. Just run the configure and compile. It should replace mplayer. Type "./configure --help" to get a list of options you can use.

For DVD, all I use is gmplayer or aka gui of mplayer. If I want DVD navigation, I use Ogle. IMO, Ogle is a lot better for DVD watching than mplayer. Xv depends on your video card driver. If it supports Xv (hardware overlay acceleration), then you can use it. If it does not, you have to use other video outputs.

Mplayer does not have a way to list tracks in GUI. You have to make a frontend program for this feature.

Consider yourself lucky. got Ogle to install, but when I try to installe the GUI for it from the same website, then it says that I have libglade problems, and so I then install whatever's the newest version, and still no luck.... And to think I also installed Python for nothing now....
