Finally I installed it !!!!!!!!!!

Let me explain the errors and the way I solved it

Error 1 : GCC version related error and
Error 2 : " X11 support required for GUI compilation "

Solutions : check whether you installed all the required development tools and packages . If you are using CentOS or Redhat go to menu /applications /settings/Add-remove applications and install Develpment tools + X software development + Gnome software development + KDE software develpment .
Try again your command ./configure --enable-gui
Then most probably you will get the next error

Error 2 : " The GUI requires GTK devel packages (which were not found) "
Solutions : download the following RPMs ( Search google and get it )
binutils-2.16.91.0.6-3.i386.rpm
gtk+-12.10-33.src.rpm
glib-devel-1.2.10-15.i386.rpm
gtk+-devel-1.2.10-33.i386.rpm
Install it

Then issue the command
./configure --enable-gui
make
su (if you're not already root)
make install

Type mplaer on command promopt --- I got it ..

Is this a 64 bit system? I've had no problems on 32 bit environments, apart from getting the correct prerequisites as you say.
