mplayer in fc3 no sound

I have recently installed mplayer in fedora core 3 using synaptic. It plays all the wmv asf and gp files . However , when i tried to play vcd through gui it plays the cd but no sound is there. i tried all the codecs given in the preference dialogue box but no suceess. i also tried the option on terminal such as vcd://2/dev/hdc but no sound. my sound card is 100% ok as i can hear all types audios in fc3. some time it gives the message "too many sound codecs-[8624 byte and then is the figure such 8564565 ] and when i use othe rcodec through gui such as sdl etc it says sound codec not there.
where is the problem and how can i hear the sound while video plays.
please help

You might need the windows codecs which you can download from the mplayer homepage. Place them in /usr/lib/win32. You also need to build a new mplayer from source to make a version of it that uses the newly installed windows codecs.
