A month ago i was using SUSE 9.0 with KDE 3.1 and i had the same problem, but i couldn't fix it. The only solution at that time was to download a front end (KPLAYER) or change to gnome everytime i wanted the fullscreen.
Now i'm using SUSE 9.2 with KDE 3.3 and the fullscreen works fine.
You could try to upgrade KDE or get KPLAYER.

Good luck
