I am aware that RH8 does not support MP3 out of the box, and that there is a plugin for it.
Tried the rpm from www.xmms.org , but that did not work, found rpm on ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshrpms/psyche/xmms/xmms-mp3-1.2.7-13.p.i386.rpm but when I try and install it, I get themessage that this is not a proper rpm. (It also has a zero size.....)
No idea.....
Spent ages on it last night.
When I "open" an mp3 xmms opens and shows the "open file" dialg box.
Selecting a file makes no difference at all, it doesn't show on the playlist, it doesn't DO anything, it just shows the "open file" box again and again and again......
No joy there either, I'm afraid. Options are:
CD Audio Player 1.2.7
Id Software .cin Player 1.2.7
MikMod Player 1.2.7
Ogg Vorbis Player 1.2.7
Tone Generator 1.2.7
Wave Player 1.2.7
It could be that there were some errors during the rpm installation,
check if the rpm is indeed on your system:
rpm -qa | grep xmms-mpg123
if it's not on your system:
rpm -ivh <rpmname>
If it is installed...
maybe you could reinstall xmms and the plugins
I'm having exactly the same problem although I have managed to install mpg321 for the command line so i'm not completly without music (hurray!), and its not that difficult to use, ok to tide me over but xmms would be much easier to use if i could get it to play an mp3.
You could check out mp3blaster. It's also command line, but based off ncurses so it's gui in console if that makes sense. If not, check it out, it will. Head over to www.freshmeat.net and search for mp3blaster
Tried 3 times to install the xmms mp3 plug-in, but each time it trashes my system............
1st HDD=SCSI 9GB, DualBoot W2K FAT32 (also tried with NTFS) and RH8.0 in separate partitions.
2nd HDD=IDE 60GB, FAT32 - Data.
Each timeI install the plug-in, when I reboot it will not see the boot loader at all, and I have to re-install everything.
Thankfully, the 60GB HDD stays untouched
Until I know more about what I am doing, I think I'll give it a miss for now.
(Or just wait until there is a port of WinAmp.....)
