Mozilla Thunderbird - Can anyone explain headless mode?

What is headless mode useful for?

Code:
$ thunderbird --help

Code:
  --headless         Run without a GUI.
Am i right to assume, that running thunderbird like this, will allow for notifications of new emails via `notify-send`?

Say for instance, i add
Code:
thunderbird --headless
to my xsession startup script, i can then be notified of new emails?

I don't use Thunderbird but I do use Firefox. I've always gotten better support at their fora.

Thunderbird 52.9.1

thunderbird --help does not show a --headless option.
