Mozilla and Firefox Font problem after changing monitor

Hi,

I use Mandrake 9.2. Recently I changed my monitor from CRT to a 15" Flat Screen. This entailed plugging the monitor in, switching the computer back on - and it worked immediately. It is an ADI (610) flat screen. The only problem I have is that the display of fonts in both Mozilla and Firefox is messed up. By messed up, I mean 'ugly' - the wrong size and not anti-aliased. I tried changing various combinations of fonts, settings, use own fonts (or not), use system or own resolutions etc. (in Firefox, using Tools, Options, Fonts and Colors), but I cannot get satisfactory results - just an ugly version of a different font. I think that something else must be at fault. Also, webpages are displayed very well in both Konqueror and Opera, but I prefer to use Firefox. Any suggestions of what to try would be greatly appreciated.

Possibly your new monitor has a different dots per inch (dpi) rating than the old. If so you will need to reconfigure X. I don't know how this is done in Mandrake: you may need to run the xf86config utility which will ask you some questions about your video card, monitor, mouse and keyboard and create an /etc/X11/XF86Config (or XF86Config-4) file for you.

The other thing I found with Firefox was that I needed to adjust the anti-aliasing settings in KDE (I think I unchecked an option which disabled anti-aliasing for certain font sizes - sorry I don't have the machine in front of me now). However this probably would not be affected just by changing your monitor.

A solution (I think) is to install Firefox version:

firefox-0.8-i686-linux-gtk2+xft.tar.gz

rather than a version without the GTK and XFT
