Mount with changes in memory only

I am not even totally sure what kind of filesystem or application this is, but I need a specific behavior.

I need the ability to mount a filesystem on a disk so that it is read-only, as in the disk data cannot be changed, however the system needs to see it as read-write, allowing changes to be made, but the changes must be memory only and not actually ever get written to the disk.

Furthermore....

Essentially I am trying to use nfs as root for many many stations, but I need the nfs export to be Read Only so that nobody on a station can make any changes to the fs.

Obviously and as expected making the root filesystem read-only has bad effects such as the inability to mount things without -n and a lot of programs complaining.

Essentually I am looking for a way, in the fs tab, to mount an nfs share that is read-only as read-write keeping the changes in ram.
