missing gtk+ libraries

I'm trying to compile some source in Mandrake 10.1 Official, but i get the following error:

#./configure
....
checking for gtk_main in -lgtk... (cached) no
configure: warning: *** GTK+ libraries not found. X code will not be built. ***

but, I've got all the gtk+ packages installed, which should contain the required libs(?):

# rpm -qa | grep gtk+
libgtk+-x11-2.0_0-2.4.9-9.1.101mdk
libgtk+extra0-0.99.17-4mdk
gtk+2.0-2.4.9-9.1.101mdk
libgtk+2.0_0-2.4.9-9.1.101mdk
libgtk+2.0_0-devel-2.4.9-9.1.101mdk
libgtk+extra0-devel-0.99.17-4mdk
libgtk+1.2-1.2.10-40mdk
libgtk+1.2-devel-1.2.10-40mdk

Can anyone help?

Are they installed in your path? (sorry I don't mess around with RPMs at all)

Also try issuing the command "./configure" while being a normal user instead of root. And only "su root" to "make install."

As far as I can see, the libgtk files are all in /usr/lib. Is there any way I can make a link to these, or something?

edit: I understand I need to use the pkg-config tool to link to the libs, can someone assist with this?
