mic volume help

i'm running slackware 10 and i just compiled and installed audacity and everthing runs great except the mic recording volume is too low. i cant hear what i've recorded unless i turn my spearkers way, way up with the physical volume knob on the speaker(know what i mean?). anyway, i turned the mic volume to the max in alsamixer and the mice volume bar in audacity is maxed, but it's still too soft. i dont know if it's a problem with audacity or my system in general because i dont have any programs for recording sound or taking input from the mic to test it out with(i might have one that came with slackware that i'm unaware of). can anybody give me some help?
